Why do we read so little business books?

Business Books

For many years I am trying to understand a cultural phenomenon. According to PARP, we registered almost 2 million businesses, while the average print book business is 2,000 copies. With a simple calculation we get an alarming number: one title business is read by one entrepreneur per thousand. What is the reason for this state of affairs?

Books and guides business have yet assumed great value for business, popularize and suggest some solutions or even an idea for a business, and sometimes allow you to understand a particular industry or new, innovative strategies. Below is a list of potential reasons aversion entrepreneurs to the business literature:

1. High prices of books, ranging from 40 to over 100 eur per one copy.

If we take into account other costs of a typical entrepreneur, both those related to the activities (renting of premises, utilities, advertising, taxes, social insurance, sometimes the cost of labor, etc.), as well as private ones (food, media, often one or more loan installments etc.) is for training and personal development is actually very little. Thus, buying a book becomes a luxury rather than Article necessities for the entrepreneur.

2. Hundreds of similar titles.

Many entrepreneur struggling with this dilemma, reviewing the book in a bookstore. Motivation, personal development, management, marketing, and in each of these departments hundreds little different from each position. Perhaps after reading one book from the field, many people comes to the conclusion that it does not make sense to read the next item on the same subject?

3. The content inadequate to the Polish realities.

Until recently, this was the main obstacle before buying. Book market was almost entirely dominated by translating American guides, which in Polish reality had little in common. Currently on the shelves is, however, more and more books by Polish authors and translations of English-speaking positions are chosen much more carefully than before. Choice, and quantitative and qualitative, is much larger, but so few entrepreneurs looking for business knowledge in the handbooks.

4. Too much theory, few practical tips.

This is one of the most serious allegations against this type of literature. Theories not supported by reliable data, drawn from false premises, or theories, which lost for the news, and the media are still popular. And a dilemma: how to distinguish between valuable book from trivial, unprofessional or simply written unfairly?

5. The fixed habits.

Europe do not have the habit of reading, so it is not surprising that adults, including entrepreneurs, do not like reading. Reading, for many reasons, often discouraging to read anything outside the official canon of the school, then it is hardly surprising that people do not read and do not want to read. A study shows that the more books in the home, the greater the chance that the child will be in the future, liked to read.

6. Lack of time.

The larger the company, the more valuable knowledge is needed on almost every level of management. Thus, the business literature could prove to be the perfect complement to the knowledge of training, meetings and conferences. However, I still can not understand why the average print book business in Poland amounts to only 2,000 copies. Had so few traders felt the need to broaden their knowledge?

7. No need.

Small entrepreneurs do not usually feel the need to consult their business ideas with anyone outside the immediate family. Somewhat is the belief in the style of "I know all the best," a source in the education school, where children are taught to officials and etatowców, and not on the entrepreneurs who will be able to set up a business for the business.

Therefore, if someone has the courage to start their own business it is dependent on its own initiative, persistence and determination in developing and keeping alive his company. The idea was his. All that is important for the company depends on it. So why would he listen to someone from the outside, even if the author of the guide business. A little bit of this right, but we must admit that in some books, you can find tips on how to solve some problems, which, for small businesses seem to be unsolvable. Paradoxically, the better trading book are economic, as recently wrote in a column "phenomenon popularity economic books." With that economics is a subject of interest almost every consumer, and business is still subject rather hermetic and niche.

The crucial question is whether entrepreneurs should read more?

Is the book business, you can find effective strategies that have the potential to change for the better functioning of a small or medium business? There is no single answer to such questions. From myself I will add only that reading develops imagination, broadens horizons and may significantly contribute to revise their views or to hatch a new, valuable business idea. And it is even with the few mentioned reasons, it is worth reading the book business.
